“Kind of Sucks”
Did you see what Tesla unveiled last night? A Roadster that can drive upside down, fly, and go from 0 to 60 in less than a second. Unbelievable.
Watching what Tesla is promising got me thinking about how quickly technology is advancing. It also brought to mind something Sam Altman said back in 2024 about GPT-4. He said it “kind of sucks.”
At the time, GPT-4 seemed incredible. And it was, especially compared to what came before it. But Altman’s point was that as amazing as the technology seemed, we would eventually look back and realize just how primitive it was.
I think that’s where we are with AI today. We’re doing things that seemed impossible just a few years ago, and yet there’s a pretty good chance the tools we’re all so impressed with right now will kind of suck compared to what’s coming next.
Of course, all that additional capability doesn’t necessarily make us better at using it. Just because the car gets faster doesn’t mean the person behind the wheel becomes a better driver. Experience and judgment will matter more than ever as these technologies continue to advance.
But that’s also what makes this moment so fascinating. We’re watching technology advance at a pace that’s difficult to comprehend, and we probably can’t even imagine what’s coming around the corner.
What a time to be alive.
