Nothing is Better Than Mom’s Cooking
Close your eyes for a moment and picture your favorite meal your mom or grandma makes. You can probably smell it before you can even see it. Maybe it is her meatballs simmering on the stove, maybe it is a pot of gumbo, maybe it is your grandma’s chocolate cake cooling on the counter. Whatever it is, you know it instantly. Not just because of the ingredients, but because of the feeling that comes with it. You know how it is supposed to taste even before the first bite.
Then think about the first time you asked for the recipe and tried to make it yourself. You were sure having the ingredients and the instructions would be enough. You followed the steps, watched the clock, and did your best to recreate something you had known your whole life. And when it was finally done, it was good. Maybe even very good. But it was not hers.
It was not hers because the recipe was never the whole story. Your mom knows when the heat is just a little too high before anything burns. She knows when the roux has turned the right color without needing a timer to tell her. She knows when the onions are ready, when the shrimp need to go in, and when another minute will change the whole dish. She knows when it needs more seasoning, even when the recipe says it should already be enough. Judgment lives in experience, instinct, repetition, and care. It lives in the person, not on the recipe card.
And that is why a large language model will never replace human judgment, no matter how many people insist that it will.
An LLM can have the ingredients. It can have the instructions. It can even produce something that looks polished and complete. But it cannot know in the way a human being knows. It cannot sense when something is off before the problem is obvious. It cannot recognize when the smallest fact is actually the one that matters most. It cannot understand why one more question, one more pause, or one more minute of thought might change everything. It can generate language. But it cannot inherit judgment.
That is not a flaw in the system. That is the boundary. AI is the sous-chef. It can chop, measure, and organize, but it cannot taste the broth.
And it is a boundary we should want to keep.
Because in the most important parts of life, and certainly in the justice system, we should not want approximation where judgment is required. We should not want something that sounds right to replace someone who knows when it is right. We should not confuse a polished output with wisdom any more than we would confuse a copied recipe with your mom standing at the stove.
The recipe and the ingredients matter. And the tool can help.
But nothing is better than mom’s cooking.
